Currently, most projects are funded by the club itself, with applications for funding reviewed the third Wednesday of each month by a committee composed of board members/service chairs representing the community, international and vocational service aspects of Rotary. The club uses the same grant application form as the foundation. Click here for Grant Application Form.
The club has also established a local foundation which is a 501(c)(3) organization set up to accept tax-deductible donations. Currently the foundation is building an endowment the proceeds from which will fund projects in the future. Below are the policies of that foundation.
BOULDER FLATIRONS ROTARY FOUNDATION (adapted/excerpted from Foundation Policies adopted January 2004 and revised November 2006)
The Boulder Flatirons Rotary Foundation exists to serve as a 501(c)(3) receptacle for donors who would like a tax deduction when donating to our Club activities; to serve as a conduit to other organizations and/or individuals deserving of receiving funding in order to further their good works; and to serve as a reserve/savings venue for the charitable activities of the Boulder Flatirons Rotary Club.
The sources of funds include:
-
Funds generated by club members including Happy Dollars and Lottery/Drawings;
-
Direct contributions from individuals, both Rotarians and non-Rotarians;
-
Direct contributions from other clubs and organizations;
-
Member giving through voluntary billing deductions; and
-
Member birthday gifts to the Foundation (e.g., when you turn 50, donate $50 to the Foundation)
Funds are invested in instruments which provide a high rate of return, consistent with providing liquidity and preservation of capital. At the discretion of the Foundation Board, a portion of funds received will be used to build an endowment which will eventually become an ongoing source of funds. An investment policy will be developed, following ERISA guidelines and 30 percent of all new funds generated will be earmarked for that endowment.
It will also be the policy of the board that "any money in the regular Foundation money market account over the amount of $5,000 should be distributed annually."
Funds will be expended in ways which meet the following criteria:
-
Consistent with the ideals of Rotary;
-
Consistent with published guidelines;
-
Reflect the broad desires of the members and the board of the Club; and
-
Reflect the desires of those making direct contributions to the Foundation.
The Foundation Request Committee (presently consisting of the Foundation Board) will meet quarterly to review grant requests. With the exception of scholarships for study at accredited institutions, direct allocation of funds will be made only to organizations. These might include, but are not limited to:
-
Assistance for needy individuals in the community;
-
Scholarships as may be recommended by the Club (such as RYLA)
-
Selected World Community Service Projects, where we are expected to provide support
-
To support other charitable activities from time to time.
